New data mining search engine

After some discussions on KDnuggets forums, I have started a new Google search engine related to data mining:

The aim of such a search engine is to gather contributions of several people in the domain of data mining. Everybody interested can participate by adding websites, forums, news, research articles, white papers, blogs, etc. that are related to data mining.

The links you can provide are not restricted to data mining, but should be related to one of the following topics:
  • Data mining
  • Machine learning
  • Knowledge discovery
  • Pattern recognition
  • Exploratory data analysis
  • Data visualization
More than 30 links have already been added, but don't hesitate to add your website/blog if you have one which is not already listed. The idea of such a search engine is that the quality of results should be better than simply using Google since websites are manually added. At the moment, the search is done on the whole web with a strong focus on the added links. Once the number of links is high enough, I will change the options so that only manually added links will be searched. Feel free to post a comment if you have any suggestion.

Data analysis blog

DataSciences Analytics is a blog dealing with any kind of data analyses such as statistics and data mining. The author, John Aitchison, claims that his blog is non-technical and it is the case. All posts are readable. Subjects covered are statistics in general, marketing and news related to data analysis. Posts are comprehensive and constitute good reading materials. Unfortunately, it is not possible to let a comment on his blog (due to spam problems). However, posts are worth reading and comments can be made to the author through a special form.

Juice Analytics' Blog

It's always a pleasure for me to find interesting blogs about data mining and to present them here. Juice Analytics is company that... well, let's them define what they do with their own words: "Juice Analytics helps small and mid-market companies develop deep prospect and customer understanding through visualization and analytics of existing data". They have a weblog which is a mine of useful information about data and all processes related to data. Their posts clearly reflect their experience as well as their strong relationships with real problems coming from the industry. I warmly recommend you this blog.

Now boarding!

Here is some food for the week-end:

  • Will is explaining a good alternative to the standard Euclidean distance by introducing the Mahalanobis distance on his blog
  • Andy is writing about the fact that Google seems to start integrating blog post in its results (pointed by Matthew)
By the way, I would like to thank Joël Arnold for the nice drawing he made for me (picture on the right).

Data Mining and Predictive Analytics

I had another subject in mind to post today, but after reading Will Dwinnell's comment on my blog, I started reading his blog (curiosity is a good skill!). In fact, the blog is co-written by Dean Abbott. Posts on their blog are very technical and when reading them, you can easily see that they have experience in the domain of data mining. Their blog originally started in 2003 and seems to have a second life since October 2006. These days, they write on topics such as clustering and softwares, among others. I strongly recommend you this blog.

Meaning of data mining

I think that I good idea to begin a blog on data mining will be to give you a small book review. As everything that I will write on this blog, this book review will only involve my personal opinions.

There exists hundreds of books on what I call data mining. In fact, the first thing to do would be to clearly define what does data mining mean - what does it mean for me - and how it differs from machine learning for example. Although I will not write about that now, you should be informed on the fact that you can found different definitions in the literature (that's why I write what does it mean for me).

An interesting topic of discussion is this one: what does the expression data mining mean for you? Does it mean making predictions? Understanding data? Getting knowledge from data?
And among all, does it sound like the term machine learning? I know that some books give quite precise definitions of both. However, I think that the everyday research meaning of the term is not so precise.

Finally, here is an overview of what is coming soon on Data Mining Research blog:

  • A small book review on Introduction to Data Mining (Tan et al. 2006)
  • An incomplete list of books concerning data mining
  • Pointers to data mining websites
Have a nice day.
Sandro.
