Data Mining Lab

The Data Mining Lab, part of the Brigham Young University, has started a new (January 2008) blog on data mining. Their research is mainly focusing on (as written on their blog):

  • Social Capital in Online Communities
  • Genealogical Record Linkage
  • Transfer Learning
  • Meta Learning
The good thing is that many lab members are posting. It will be interesting to have posts from various topics (or from the same, but with different point of views). All the best for their blog!

Thanks for noticing our lab's blog. The blog is new, but our lab has been around for several years now and so we have some experience in a variety of areas, including those you listed, along with some applied experience in everyday business situations with some small companies located around the university. I briefly looked over your blog and website, but I was just interested in how you got into data mining. You said on our blog that data mining isn't yet in the mainstreamm, did you first learn about it in school or in the workplace. Anyways, thanks for posting about our blog, hopefully we can help contribute to the community.

No problem, one of the goal of Data Mining Research is also to inform readers about ongoing research in data mining and new websites or blogs.

Thanks for your question. Regarding my experience with data mining, I started with a master project about airborne pollen concentration prediction. Then I continued with a PhD on data mining for decision support in engineering. Now I'm finishing it and looking for a job either in data mining (research) or in business intelligence (industry)
