Data mining for the car industry

The Auto Industry website has an article of a few lines summarizing a data mining application for the car industry. More precisely, Ford is using data mining for early warning of supplier failure. After North American suppliers, they plan to cover Europe and Latin America. An example of application is to track late shipment events to be able to minimize this problem.

Well it seems to me that Ford would get more value out of this work if it embedded the resulting insight into its operational systems. Rather than having someone tell them who are the "bad" suppliers, why not embed a model that scores suppliers in the systems that order parts so that they can use that information as part of deciding which vendor to use? With 1,6000 vendors and (I am sure) many thousands of orders, this would surely pay off.
